Maintaining Your Dental Implants

May 9, 2025

Because they are firmly anchored into the jaw with a titanium post, dental implants are the most durable, natural-looking, and best performing types of restorative dentistry appliances. Whether you have a single implant, multiple appliances, or an all-on-4 dental implant, your appliances have the potential to last a lifetime. Of course, keeping your dental implant appliances looking and functioning like new does take a bit of maintenance.

If you have recently gotten dental implants, or you plan to get them in the future, the team at American Dental has some tips to help you maintain your appliances so they can last the rest of your life!

An Oral Health Routine for Your Dental Implants

Unlike other types of restorative dentistry appliances – like full or partial dentures – dental implant appliances are not meant to be removed for cleaning. The titanium posts used in implantation surgery are permanently anchored to the jaw, and your gums will contour to the shape of your implant appliance once it is installed. These implant appliances are your new teeth, and as such, it’s important to treat them just like you would your natural teeth. The oral health routine for maintaining dental implants is very similar to your normal routine.

That includes brushing your teeth twice every day, flossing once a day and as necessary to remove stuck food, and using an ADA-approved mouthwash. When selecting a toothpaste, be sure to choose one that is non-abrasive, and brush with a soft-bristled brush. Be gentle when brushing your implant appliance to avoid damaging it.

You should also schedule a dental checkup every 6 months. Your dentist can check on the integrity of your implant appliances and give them a professional cleaning. They will also look at the health of your dental implant sites, ensuring there is no bone loss or infection around the titanium posts.

Lifestyle choices are another thing to consider. If you smoke or drink staining liquids like coffee or wine, it could potentially stain your implant appliances. Certain foods can also be damaging, like nuts and hard candies. Just like natural teeth, eating sugary and sticky foods can encourage the growth of bacteria and plaque near the gumline where your implant is located, so enjoying these foods in moderation is a good idea.
