Can You Get Dermal Fillers at the Dentist?

November 18, 2022

Dermal fillers are used to correct a range of issues, from decreasing the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face to treating recessed scars. These types of treatments are safe and effective, and over the past few years, they are in higher demand than ever before. If you’re interested in dermal fillers, you may think that you need to go to a plastic surgeon to get them done, but that’s not the case. Medical doctors, nurses, and even dentists are all qualified to administer dermal fillers. As such, dermal fillers have become more and more popular as a treatment you can get at your dentist’s office!

While we can’t speak for every dentist in the country, we can say that dermal fillers, including Juvederm®, are available at all 8 of American Dental’s locations in the Chicago area. If you are living with any condition that can be treated with dermal fillers, we encourage you to make an appointment with us today to discuss your options.

How Do Dermal Fillers Work?

There are many different types of dermal fillers, but generally speaking, they are gel-like substances that are injected underneath the skin to restore lost volume or fill in recessed areas. Juvederm® and some other fillers also contain hyaluronic acid which is a naturally occurring substance that keeps your skin looking plump and hydrated. Once applied, fillers can last anywhere from 6 months to 1 year, at which time the procedure can be repeated to keep you looking more youthful all the time.

How Are Dermal Fillers Used in Dentistry?

Dermal fillers are most commonly used to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face and neck. For example, a dermal filler could be applied around the mouth to make smile lines less prominent, or around the eyes to soften wrinkles there. Dermal fillers can also be used on recessed scar tissue to make it look more even. While these are not strictly dental treatments, they can be performed at our offices.

Lip plumping is another common application of dermal fillers. Applying dermal fillers to the lips can make them look fuller. This type of treatment can be applied to any patient, but it is also used in patients living with excessive gingival display, also known as “gummy smile.” This condition occurs when too much gum tissue shows above your upper teeth when you smile. With dermal fillers applied to the lips, their fuller appearance can often cover up a portion of the gums and bring the bottom of the upper lip closer to the top of the teeth.
