Caring for Your Teeth in the Great Outdoors

March 28, 2025

Now that the weather’s warming up, we’re willing to bet you can’t wait to spend some time outside. Are you planning on taking a long hike, going camping, or playing some sports in the great outdoors? If you are, it’s important to remember that oral hygiene never takes a break. The bacteria in your mouth are constantly working, consuming the sugars you eat and transforming them into harmful byproducts that can erode your tooth enamel and lead to cavities, gingivitis, and more.

If you’re planning on being away from home for an extended period of time, don’t forget to consider your oral health while you’re away. Here are some tips from the team at American Dental to help you take care of your teeth and gums while you spend time outside.

Pack A Toothbrush

When you’re loading up your pack for your next hike, camping trip, or beach outing, be sure to pack a toothbrush, toothpaste, and plenty of clean water. This way, you can easily stop to brush  your teeth after eating, or any time your mouth is feeling not-so- fresh. You can also include some other items in your oral health kit, like some floss picks, a spool of dental floss, and some ADA-approved mouthwash.

Since we’re talking about toothbrushes, you should also pick up a hard case with holes for ventilation. A hard plastic case will prevent your toothbrush from being broken during any rough activities, and the ventilation holes will keep it dry to prevent bacteria or mold from growing inside the case.

Bring Mouth-Healthy Foods

As always, you want to avoid eating foods that are high in sugar when you’re outside. The more sugar you consume, the more friendly your mouth will be to bacteria that can grow out of control. Keeping these bacteria in check is the most important aspect of your oral health routine, and eating less sugar is a big part of that.

Instead of bringing protein bars or trail mix containing chocolate, consider alternatives like nuts, dried fruit, or veggie chips. These items will give you the energy you need to complete a difficult hike without filling your mouth with sugar. While you’re at it, we suggest ditching sports drinks or energy drinks in favor of pure, clear water. Not only will this help you avoid adding extra sugar to your diet, it will also stimulate saliva production and wash away harmful bacteria to keep them in check.

Consider Bringing Sugar-Free Gum

Although it may seem counterintuitive, chewing gum can be a great way to keep your teeth clean when you’re outside, although choosing the correct gum is important. The ADA has given its endorsement to sugar-free gums sweetened with xylitol, which can be chewed for at least 20 minutes after eating to remove bits of stuck food, stimulate saliva production, and freshen your breath.
