Don’t Forget to Use Your Dental Benefits Before the End of the Year

December is many of our patients’ favorite month. Not only is it the start of the holiday season, but it’s also the time when we reflect on all the great things that happened this real and anticipate the opportunities to come. December is also an important month for those who have dental benefits.

Many dental insurance plans reset on January 1st, so December is your last chance to use up any remaining benefits you have built up so they won’t be wasted. Here are a few reasons why you should be thinking about getting some dental care before the end of the year so you don’t waste your benefits:

Get Preventative Care

When it comes to your teeth, prevention is key. Many oral health issues can be treated more effectively if caught early. For example, if you have a cavity, getting it filled as soon as possible will prevent tooth decay from advancing to the point where you need a root canal or the affected tooth removed. Fluoride is another treatment that can prevent you from getting cavities in the future.

You should also be keeping a close eye on your gum health. If there’s an issue, spotting it early will allow you to make the lifestyle changes you need to resolve it before it progresses from minor gingivitis to full-blown periodontitis. By scheduling a checkup before the end of the year, your dentist can identify any issues with your gums so you can begin treating them as soon as possible.

Your dental insurance will cover many preventative treatments, so if you have any benefits left, these are a good way to use them up at the end of the year.

Save Money on Necessary Dental Care

Your dentist may have identified an oral health issue at your last checkup. If that’s the case, now is the time to take care of it. If you don’t, you will have to draw on your next year’s benefits to get it treated, and the benefits you accumulated in the current year will have been wasted.

Do you have a nagging toothache that needs to be diagnosed? A cavity that needs to be filled? By getting it done now, you will save yourself some money that can be used to address any issues that come up in the new year.

Get a Free Checkup

The American Dental Association recommends getting two dental checkups every year, and many dental plans allow you to get both of them free of charge. How many checkups did you have this year? If you’ve only had one checkup so far, we suggest scheduling another ASAP, before the year’s close. That way, you can be sure your insurance will cover both of the dental checkups you need next year and that your teeth will be nice and clean going into the new year.
