How to Keep Your Teeth Clean with Braces

February 22, 2022

Braces are used to correct a number of issues like tooth crowding, gaps, and more. While braces are proven to be effective, they can take anywhere from one to three years to do their job. During this time, it is up to the patient to keep their teeth clean so that when those braces are removed, there won’t be any other problems like tooth decay or stains to deal with. Whether you choose the type of traditional braces with metal brackets or the type with clear brackets, it can be difficult to clean your teeth with them on. That’s why the team at American Dental is here to give you some tips about keeping your braces and your teeth clean while receiving orthodontic treatment.

Talk to Your Dentist

As you go through the multiple appointments necessary to fit your braces, don’t be afraid to talk to your dentist and dental hygienist about the best ways to keep your teeth clean during your treatment. As dental practitioners, we have spent years cleaning teeth with and without braces, so we know exactly how to keep them clean. You should also be sure to keep up with your usual dental checkups every six months and schedule an additional visit if you notice any problems with your braces or your teeth. Your dentist can perform nearly any dental procedure – from fillings to root canals – with your braces on so always get in touch no matter what you need.

Home Cleaning

Keeping your teeth clean with braces starts with maintaining your usual oral health routine. That means brushing twice per day, using mouthwash, and flossing. You may also want to brush and floss an additional time after eating, especially if you notice food particles stuck in your teeth or braces. Of course, brushing and flossing will now be more difficult; using a special interdental toothbrush (sometimes called a pipe cleaner toothbrush) in conjunction with your normal toothbrush will help you get into the spaces between your brace wire and your teeth. As for flossing, a floss threader or special orthodontic floss will make the job easier. You may even want to invest in a water flosser for best results.

Invisalign Braces

Today, many of our patients choose Invisalign braces to correct tooth issues. These aligners are made from advanced dental resins and they are proven to be just as effective (or even more effective) than traditional braces. Not only are they clear, making them nearly invisible, they can also be taken out for cleaning and eating. With Invisalign braces, you can maintain your usual cleaning routine without the need for any special tools. As long as you keep your aligners in for at least 22 hours per day, they will provide the same results as traditional braces and you may even be able to complete your treatment in less time.
