How You Can Improve Your Oral Health Routine in 2025

The new year is the perfect opportunity to make some healthy changes that will improve your life in the future. What will you resolve to do in 2025? Will you start hitting the gym? Eat more vegetables? Take a class? All of these are great resolutions, but there’s one you can make that is simple and affordable. All it takes is dedication and consistency. We’re talking about improving your oral health routine! Here are some ways you can have healthier teeth and gums in 2025:

Start Flossing

When you come in for an appointment at American Dental, our hygienists always ask whether or not you floss as part of your oral health routine. In general, the answer is, “Not as often as I should.” If you don’t floss currently, it’s never too late to start! Flossing can help remove biofilm, plaque, and tartar from between the teeth and the areas below the gum line, reducing your risk of developing gingivitis and periodontitis.

Improve Your Flossing Technique

For those of you who already floss, there is always room for improvement. If you use floss picks, we suggest switching to traditional dental floss for better results. Unlike a floss pick, you can curve dental floss into a C-shape once you reach the gums to remove plaque buildup from around the tooth root. Use at least 18 inches of floss wrapped around your index fingers and gently guide it between each tooth using your thumbs. This will cover the most area, and you can save your floss picks for those times when you’re away from home. You should also remember to rinse out your mouth after flossing to fully remove anything that was dislodged from between your teeth.

Keep a Toothbrush at Work

Speaking of being away from home, don’t forget to pay attention to your oral health when you’re at work! You can try keeping a toothbrush in your desk or locker so you can brush it after lunch or when you have a snack.

Always Brush Your Tongue

Many people neglect their tongue during their oral health routine, but it’s important to keep it clean. Brushing your tongue can help prevent oral infections, including thrush, improve your breath, and even prevent tooth decay over the long term.

Consider Upgrading Your Toothbrush

Using the right tool for the job will always lead to better results, and while traditional toothbrushes will certainly improve your oral health, you can do even better by switching to an electric toothbrush. A 2014 review of multiple studies showed that electric toothbrushes provide slightly better outcomes than manual toothbrushes. Not only are they easier to use, but they also come with built-in timers to ensure you always brush for the recommended two minutes.
