Oral Emergency Guide: Five Steps We Recommend You Take Immediately to Deal with a Lost Filling or Crown

April 29, 2021

When you have tooth decay, cracked teeth, or some other tooth issues, getting a filling or crown can
help stop the damage from progressing and keep your tooth root alive. While in most cases, a crown or
filling will stay in place for years, they do fall out sometimes. When that happens, you must get checked
out by our emergency dental services in Chicago right away so that your restorative dental work can be
fixed. If you have lost a crown or filling, here are a few steps that the team at American Dental
recommends you take to prevent this temporary issue from becoming a big problem.

Save the Crown or Filling if Possible

As soon as you notice your crown or filling is missing, see if you can locate it. If it’s still partially attached
and can be removed without too much difficulty, taking it out will prevent you from swallowing it or
choking on it. Put it in a safe place because your dentist may be able to reuse it or examine it and find
out why it fell out.

Schedule an Appointment with Your Dentist Immediately

When your crown or filling falls out, the sensitive tooth material underneath will be exposed to the acids
in your mouth. This is a dental emergency, so call your dentist and schedule an appointment as soon as
you can. Quick action can save your tooth, so don’t hesitate to make that appointment.

Protect the Underlying Tooth

If you still have your crown or filling, you may be able to put it back in place temporarily with dental
cement that can be found at most drug stores. If you can’t locate the crown or filling, you can cover the
affected area with dental wax to protect it until you can get to the dentist.

Keep Your Mouth Clean

While you’re waiting for your appointment, it’s important to continue your usual oral health routine.
Pay special attention to the affected tooth, brushing gently to remove any food debris. You can also
rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution after eating to keep it extra clean. This may also help
with any pain or sensitivity you’re experiencing.

Avoid Damaging Foods and Beverages

Certain foods contain acids that can damage your exposed tooth surfaces. If you want to keep your
tooth safe while you wait for your dental appointment, it’s best to avoid them. Try your best to chew on
the unaffected side of your mouth and avoid hard foods. It’s also a good idea to stay away from sugary
foods and beverages, as well as anything acidic, very hot, or very cold.
